Record 738,144 UK Businesses in Significant Financial Distress in Q3 2026, BTG Red Flag Alert Finds

A record 738,144 UK businesses were in significant financial distress in the third quarter of 2026, up 1.6% from 726,594 a year earlier, according to BTG's latest Red Flag Alert, published on 27 October 2026. The number in the more serious critical distress category fell 20.7% to 44,033, from 55,530 in Q3 2025.

BTG, formerly Begbies Traynor, said the figures showed how many businesses were heading into the Autumn Budget with little financial headroom.

The headline figures

The Red Flag Alert tracks two levels of distress. Significant distress covers a much wider group of businesses showing early signs of strain, while critical distress covers firms at more immediate risk.

The fall in critical distress is a mixed signal. It means fewer firms were at the sharpest end, but the wider pool of businesses under pressure kept growing.

Which sectors are under most pressure

The largest numbers in significant distress were in:

Consumer-facing sectors also rose. Bars and restaurants were up 5.0% to 18,866, food and drug retailers up 7.3% to 19,269, leisure and cultural activities up 1.7% to 20,298, and travel and tourism up 2.0% to 3,975. Personnel Today also reported the property, construction and consumer sector rises.

Julie Palmer, managing partner at BTG, said: "Record levels of 'significant' financial distress underline just how many businesses are approaching the Autumn Budget with limited financial headroom." She said she was particularly concerned about leisure and hospitality ahead of Christmas trading.
