UK venture capital firms raised $6.9 billion across 31 new funds in the third quarter of 2026, the strongest quarter on record and more than four times the average of the past two years. The figures come from HSBC Innovation Banking UK and Dealroom, reported by DIGIT on 13 October. In the same quarter, UK startups and scaleups raised $6.1 billion of venture investment.
New funds matter to founders because they are the money that will be invested over the next few years. Most of it, though, went to a small number of large managers focused on later stages.
Where the new money is
The largest funds raised in the quarter were:
- Index Ventures: three funds totalling $3.5 billion across seed, venture and growth.
- Highland Europe: €1.1 billion for its sixth growth fund.
- QuantumLight: $500 million for its second fund.
- Crane Venture Partners: $484 million across four funds.
Index Ventures alone accounts for about half the quarter's total.
Where startup investment went
Of the $6.1 billion raised by UK companies:
- Late stage: $3.5 billion (58%), including CityFibre ($1.2 billion), FNZ ($450 million) and OLIX ($312 million).
- Breakout stage: $1.9 billion.
- Early stage: $740 million.
Fintech recorded 51 funding rounds and health 62. Semiconductor companies raised $497 million in the quarter, taking the sector to $1.6 billion so far in 2026, already above its 2025 full-year record of $1.3 billion. The UK took 25% of European venture investment in the quarter and, over the first nine months of 2026, raised $23.3 billion, more than twice the total for Germany or France.
A different dataset gives a different headline. Tech.eu counts €12 billion raised across 191 UK rounds in the quarter, but 62.6% of that was debt, including two debt facilities for Nscale worth about €3.0 billion and €2.6 billion. It notes the number of rounds fell 10.7% on a year earlier and lists Innovate UK as the most active investor by deal count, with 13 deals. Equity and debt totals are not comparable, so check what any headline figure includes.
Emily Turner, chief executive of HSBC Innovation Banking UK, called the record fundraising "an encouraging signal for the UK innovation ecosystem", while noting that investment fluctuates from quarter to quarter.
What it means for founders raising now
This section is editorial guidance, not investment advice.
- More capital, same selectivity. Big new funds mean money is available, but early-stage investment was $740 million in the quarter, a small slice of the total. Seed and Series A founders still face a competitive market.
- Target the right funds. New funds often make their first investments within a year of closing. Research which managers have just raised at your stage.
- Local investors are active. Nine of the ten most active investors in UK rounds were UK-headquartered, according to the HSBC and Dealroom data.
- Deep tech is in favour. Semiconductor funding has already beaten last year's record. Hardware and deep tech founders may find more interest than in recent years.
